Top 10 Best Oscar Hosts

Oscars, officially known as the Academy Awards, have been around for past eight decades (add few more years to it) honoring the people who received them. The award in itself is legendary. It is to the world of cinema like Grammy Awards is to music, like Emmy Awards is to Television and like Tony Awards is to theater. The ceremony is as much of a trend as the award is an honor. Now palpably if there is a ceremony then having a host is inevitable. Who Does not enjoy a good show after all? In the past decades there have been many celebrities who hosted this award function out of which few turned out to be as good as anyone can be but few could not stand up to the expectations. Obviously, cause not everybody can entertain a crowd full of celebrities in a light-hearted manner. But these people surely can.

While some would feel a lot different about this opinion, but it is definitely a pity that Seth MacFarlane has refused to host Oscars again. The famous creator of comedy shows like “American Dad” and “Family Guy”. He did not really bring in the nostalgia for the present celebrities who seemed to be missing it, but he did bring a bit of modern-times jokes into this equation.

9. Ellen DeGeneres

She made to the list of top 10 best Oscar host because she never forgot that she was not just there to host the award show but also to keep the celebrities entertained and tickle their funny bones. She was the first ever openly gay (or rather lesbian) person who hosted the show. Her performance in the Oscars was generally reviewed positively. Famous lines spoken by her at the Oscars were “Maybe critics are right; maybe Hollywood movies are too violent. You know, I took a 9-year-old kid to see ‘Gladiator’ and he cried through the entire film. Now, maybe it was because he didn’t know who I was.”

8. Hugh Jackman

Why not keep the hot one into this list? That is not what I was thinking before I put his name into the top ten lists. Yeah…definitely not that. Hugh tried to bring a different genre as a host. He claimed that the era of musical is back and proved himself quite well. As said by many, he made the show “zippy”! He had a totally different scale of energy down there on the stage which proved to be quite an entertainment.

7. Alec Baldwin

Though he did not handle the stage alone, he is still among the top ten. He co-hosted the show with Steve Martin. Why, you ask? Whenever the audience thinks about any past award ceremony nobody ever remembers what Kate Winslet was wearing or what did Will Smith said (until of course something is scandalous), but everybody remembers the host of the year. They either leave bad impressions or rather good ones. This man surely left a good one.

6. Whoopi Goldberg

Being able to host the academy awards for four times she surely knows how to make a difference every single time. She has been vivid every time in her entry, one time as an African princess (in 1999) and the other time entering from a roof top (in 2002). She became a hot-shot host with her famous line “So, didja miss me?” in 1996. She was the first woman ever to host the show solo. She is best famous for her one-liners and rapid costume changes. Her unpredictability makes her interesting and worth watching and waiting for. She sure keeps the audience glued. Her lines “To make sure you don’t get shortchanged in the soapbox department, I’m going to get it all out of my system right now: Save the whales; save the spotted owl; gay rights; men’s rights; women’s rights; human rights; feed the homeless; more gun control; free the Chinese dissidents; peace in Bosnia; health-care reform; choose choice; act up; more AIDS research; let Frank Sinatra finish; Lorena Bobbitt, please meet Bob Dole, and someone stop these damn earthquakes … I think I took care of everything, didn’t I? Including my career” force us to laugh out loud.

5. Jon Stewart

Jon Stewart and his team totally changed the definition of comedy. He hosted the show twice, in 2001 and 2002. His one-liners and light-hearted jokes on the expense of award winners were not offensive, on the contrary, they were appreciated and so was he. He definitely knew that making one’s own fun can be the funniest thing to do ever, so he started with the line “Ladies and gentlemen, I just want to say I feel your scorn and accept it.” and that made him adorable among the audience.

4. Bob Hope

He first hosted the award show in 1940. That does not make him the recent host of younger generation but still he is in the top ten because he holds the record of hosting this show for nineteen times! That is a big number. This fact in itself makes him worth the list. He hosted the 25th and the 38th Academy Award ceremonies which were first to be shown on television and then the first to be captured in color, respectively.

3. Johnny Carson

He is the third most absolute host of the show for five times. He is popularly known for his awe inspiring hosting in “The Tonight Show” and that too for a very long time. His famous first line was “Welcome to the 51st Academy Awards, two hours of sparkling entertainment spread over a four-hour show”.

He is the one celebrity who always manages to make us laugh. He has hosted the Academy Awards show three times, one with his “It’s Complicated” co-star Alec Baldwin. His hilarious and light-hearted jokes always keep the spirit alive in everybody. In 2010 he and Alec Baldwin made sometimes-tired punch lines into charming barbs. The rapport between the two was amazing and beyond compare which made the audience like them even more. These two taught the future hosts (or say co-hosts) how to maintain rapport or a friendly relation on stage. This man surely knew how to give the audience fits of laughter.

Billy Crystal has hosted the Academy Awards nine times from 1990 to 2012 (yes, he also opened the 2006 Oscars). It is surely not hidden that Billy Crystal knows how to put on a good show. One of the veteran host’s most notable acts took place in 1992 when Crystal took over the stage wearing a mask worn by Hannibal Lecter, because “Silence of the Lambs” was nominated for seven awards. (The thriller won best picture) and it is considered as one of the legendary, hilarious act of all times.
